Although Mr. Lincoln more than deserves to be honored in such a way as being a permanent fixture of our society, I do feel that there are a group of people that have been ignored when it comes to the appreciation of the “American Dream” and that “for which it stands”.
There is one group of people that are solely responsible for the success and prosperity of our country. The working classes, whose blood, sweat and tears are what have made this great nation what it is today. These providers often go unnoticed and rewarded by society and government.
If it were up to me, I would design the one cent coin to resemble the millions of citizens who go to work everyday (ironically to earn not much more than the coin in question) and pay their taxes which provide the whole country with the way of life that separates us from that of the rest of the world. The people, who day after day risk their lives to keep us safe, teach our children, feed our hungry or just keep food on their own family’s table.
This country was built on the backs of hard work and determination. With out the sacrifices these people make on a daily basis this country could not function. Whether it’s the construction worker building the highway you take to work every morning or the single mom working two jobs to put her kids through school, they touch our lives in every aspect only we don’t always realize it. I myself am working class, and I still don’t always acknowledge the impact that even I make, but I know I make one.
Through out the years the country has taken for granted the contributions made by its “general” population. Considering tax breaks given to millionaires or today’s obsession with celebrities and the super rich, the “real” citizens of our towns and cities go unrecognized.
With that said, my coin would consist of the civil servants, and the all around blue collar people that day in and day out pull their own weight and try to achieve not only a level of success that comes with hard work, but the pride and satisfaction of putting in a good days work. From the fire men and police officer’s who risk their lives here at home, to the military that protect us from all over. From the non-profits that try to make our country that much better, to the people who need those charities to survive. From the bottom to the top, they are all over but still no where to be found, I say we should see them and thank them for what they are, the foundation of not just our society but a way of thinking and an ethic that I am more than proud to call all American.

This essay was very well written and has numerous explainations for the author's thoughts. The points made are thoughtful and supported very well.
I really like this one, from the way it was written to even the idea behind it. I do believe many people put their hard work into making our nation what it is, and feel that this would be a great way to honor them and make them feel appreciated the way they should.
Very interesting point; the most I see on the news about the regular, hard-working Americans is usually related to bad news: major accidents, hurricanes, shootings. America truly wouldn't be what it is today without the the people who keep this country running. In fact, it's the working class who make up America, and it is a great idea to honor them for the labor and sweat they put into their daily lives. This was very well written and gave some very good points. I would have liked to read about your vision of how the civil servants would be depicted on the coin, suc as it might be a crowd of people or it might be more specific like with policemen and firemen. Very well done, though.
Good call, power to the working class! nice details , and decent length without getting boring.
A well written piece with few flaws. I think your arguement is strong and the best I read!
I like this. It is very well written and is actually a really good idea for the face of the penny. I never would have thought of something like this for the face of the penny, but now that you mention it, i couldn't agree more.
This essay brings to life our country and how most average people live. I really felt the appreciation this person has for the average working man while reading this essay.
I like the idea behind this. It is very symbolic that you would want the most belittled portion of our society (the people who actually work every day to make it in life) on a belittled piece of currency. The imagery of a single mother with two children is very heartfelt, and most of us in this day and age know someone who is undergoing difficult times, so if related to the time period we are living in.My only question is that if there is such a broad variety of the working class, what on Earth would be the right image to put on the penny to illustrate them all? With that set aside, this was very well written, and even thought provoking.
This is a grat idea for the penny! I am working class and I come from a family of working class and I think that would be a great way to thank the working class. The essay was very well written and made the reader think and understand fully what the writer was talking about.
This essay was very well written and could easily pursuade the reader into thinking the same way
Made a very strong point. Well written.
Ha! Almost cried reading your essay. How true the everyday Blue collar worker and "general" population does so much for all our society. Your essay was extremely sincere, touching, and true.- i truly enjoyed reading it.
